What is functional medicine? Getting to the root of how you feel

After more than 20 years in critical care and emergency medicine, I know what conventional medicine does brilliantly: it saves lives in a crisis. What it often does less well is help the person who has felt “off” for months, whose labs come back normal, and who is told to sleep more and stress less. That gap is why I practice functional medicine.

What functional medicine is

Functional medicine is a root-cause approach to health. Instead of matching a symptom to a prescription, we ask why the symptom is there in the first place. Fatigue, weight gain, brain fog and poor sleep can have very different drivers in two different people, from thyroid or hormone changes to blood sugar, iron levels, sleep, stress or gut health. When we find the driver, we can treat it rather than just quiet the symptom.

How it’s different from a typical visit

  • Longer visits, so there’s time to hear your whole story

  • A close look at your history, nutrition, sleep, stress, movement and environment

  • Lab testing chosen for your symptoms and goals, not a one-size-fits-all panel

  • A clear, written plan that you help shape

  • Regular follow-up to track progress and adjust

What it can help with

Patients often come to Lovena for:

  • Fatigue and low energy

  • Hormone changes in women and men, including perimenopause and menopause

  • Weight that won’t budge despite your best efforts

  • Blood sugar and metabolic health

  • Brain fog, poor sleep and stress

  • Digestive symptoms

  • Healthy aging and longevity goals

Evidence-based, not either/or

Functional medicine isn’t a replacement for conventional care, and it isn’t about avoiding medication. When they’re the right fit, I use proven treatments like hormone therapy, GLP-1 medications and other prescriptions. I also use nutrition, exercise, sleep and targeted supplements where the evidence supports them. The goal is the plan that works best for you, and I’ll always explain the reasoning behind it.

What to expect at Lovena

It starts with a free 15-minute discovery call to make sure we’re a good fit. Your first full visit covers your history, symptoms and goals, and we order labs tailored to you. Once results are in, we review them together and build your plan. Visits are available in person in Scottsdale, or by telehealth for patients in Arizona, Colorado and Alaska.
